Joe Rogan

I was first introduced to Rogan a few years ago by a good friend and when I was told he was a stand-up comedian I had the response that most people have “the Fear Factor guy does comedy?”

In fact he does, and he does it very well.  Coming out of Boston, Rogan has a loud, physical, in your face style that cannot be touched.  He talks about it all, not only the typical stand-up subjects of sex, religion, and race, but also about science, philosophy, and other things.  How is he able to make these topics interesting and funny you ask? Well I have no fucking clue, he just does, which is the genius of his act.

I have been lucky to be able to see him twice live so far, once in Sal’s Comedy Hole (now closed down) in Hollywood, and once at the Pasadena Ice House.  The first live comedy show I ever saw was him at Sal’s.  I took my Israeli father with me, who does have a sense of humor but I wasn't sure of how he’d respond to a lot of cussing and dick jokes.  At the end of the show my dad turned to me and said “you know, he’s a smart man”.

Although he doesn't do it anymore, Rogan was famous for letting the crowd ask questions at the end of the show.  People literally asked whatever they wanted and on a limb and in the moment he would answer with either a story or quick response, both always being funny. He has since stopped doing this because he doesn't like how it ends the show on a weird note.

At the Ice House he has created a show that he does once or a couple times a week where he headlines and has about eight other comics feature under him.  This is a place where they all work out new bits and tighten them up accordingly, and for the most part they are never disappointing.  Rogan kills two birds with one stone by having a podcast in the greenroom at the same time as the show is going on.  So you can listen to a group of comics shooting the shit before they go on stage in “The Icehouse Chronicles”, a podcast produced by Rogan’s tech guy Brain Redban who owns Deathsquad Studios, a great source for comedy podcasts.

Joe has a podcast called The Joe Rogan Experience which I listen to religiously.  It started out as him and Redban sitting on a couch and answering Twitter questions.  Now it is one of the biggest comedy podcasts with over 360 episodes and still going strong.  Joe brings on guests that are fellow comedians, which is how I found out about most of the comedians in this blog, plus many others.  It is because of his podcast that so many people that listen to it can learn about so many other comedians and upcoming shows.  The best part about this podcast is that it isn't only comedy; his guests also include MMA fighters and commentators, nutritionists, journalists, authors, and physicists to name just a few other occupations.  It’s a great podcast to listen to if you want a little bit of everything. His latest comedy special "Joe Rogan, Live from the Tabernacle" was a home-fucking-run.  It is available for download on his website for only $5, so go get it!

You can find all of this stuff at Joerogan.net and Deathsquad.tv, and I highly recommend seeing him live.  He never performs alone and always has his friends feature so the shows are always a good time.  So he’s a stand-up comedian, MMA commentator, marijuana enthusiast, has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is a partial owner of Onnit Laboratories (an excellent source for real fitness equipment and health products), and does a variety of other entertainment related things,  the most interesting man in the world can suck a dick, it’s this motherfucker!

This is what got me hooked a few back ago

Bert Kreischer

Bert Kreischer, also known as "The Machine" is easily recognizable by his high-pitched laugh, but anyways, let's talk about his comedy. You want to forget about your stressful work week?  You want to let go and have a good fuckin' time? Then Bert is your man!  Like everybody else who first listened to him on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, I was fucking captivated by him and his party stories that are like the junior version of Joey Diaz's stories. He was the life of the party back in college and it transferred perfectly on stage with his ridiculous style of comedy.  It's not uncommon for his to have some drinks while on stage and take his shirt off, but all while continuing with his act and making you laugh.

Kreischer has his own podcast called The Bertcast, where he has on different guests every episode, mainly his dad, friends, fellow comedians, or a combination of them all.  Episode 1 is hard to top considering he had on his lawyer father, and ex-felon/comedian Joey Diaz.  In addition he has his own Travel channel shows called "Bert the Conqueror" and "Trip Flip".  Go to his website Bertbertbert.com to check out all of his stuff.

Check this video out to learn the origin of his nick name "The Machine", it's totally worth it.

Ian Edwards

Ian Edwards is another comedian who I had the privilege of seeing live.  He is someone who is very known in the comedy world but unfortunately not many outside of the arena know who he is.  His demeanor on stage is very laid back and in fact he never really has to raise his voice in order to get the crowd going.  Topic like dating, race, and just everyday humor are among his subject in which he brings a fresh approach.

There are so many comedians out there and a limited amount of topics that are available so every time someone brings a different point of view or way of seeing something, it’s always awesome and Edwards is among those people who does so.  He has appeared in Craig Furgeson, Conan, and many other comedy specials so if you’re in to funny black dudes, check him out.

Joey Diaz

Joey “Coco” Diaz

Without a doubt, Joey “Coco” Diaz is the most interesting comedian out there now.  His background is not of comedic origins at all, in fact for a good portion of his life he was a street guy, small time gangster if you will.  Growing up in Cuba, Diaz moved to the North Bergen, NJ at an early age and ran around on the streets doing what he could to survive. I’m not going to write about one the many stories that he has because it won’t sound nearly as good as it would coming from his mouth.

He claims that he got into stand up while in prison by going up in front of the crowd of inmates during movie night and telling jokes about the kitchen.  The way he performs is crazy-awesome.  He is another comedian that seems like he never writes out his jokes, but just goes up and performs.  I was lucky to be able to see him perform at the Icehouse comedy club in Pasadena, CA about a year ago.  I don’t even think that he was on the roster to perform that night, but he just showed up and rocked the crowd for something like 10 or 15 minutes and then just left.  The emcee, Tony Hinchcliffe, got up right after said “Joey Diaz just came up and raped our minds, and then just left” and everybody roared with laughter because that’s exactly what he did.

His fast-talking, loud-cussing, weed-smoking, not giving a fuck style of comedy is absolutely hilarious.  Regarded as the funniest man in the world by fellow friend and comedian Joe Rogan, Diaz is starting the get the recognition he deserves with roles in more movies and television and tons of comedy spots.

Diaz is a frequent guest on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast and had a podcast with comedian Felicia Michaels called Beauty and Da Beast for a long time but has stopped doing it.  He now has his own podcast, The Church of What’s Happening Now, where he talks with his co-host Lee Syatt about everything from being a fat-fuck and exercising to how he views young people now.  In addition he has guests call in who range from writers in Hollywood to friends who he used to rob people with.  His stories are incredible and you have to see him live!  He released his latest comedy album, It's Either You or he Priest, in April 2012 and currently writes and records his life stories in a series of albums entitle Testicle Testaments.  You can get it all on iTunes and check out his website Joeydiaz.net, I highly suggest it.

To get a real feel for this guy, you have to watch him, youtube doesn't do him justice though.

Christina Pazsitzky

I can’t just talk about one without the other, you must be crazy!  Christina Pazsitzky the one of the only female comedians that I actually like and respect.  Why is this you ask?  Well because she doesn’t only talk about female subjects the way that a lot of women comics do.  Her style is similar to her husband’s for the reason that she also talks about less serious topics that will put you on your ass, especially when she takes her belly out on stage and presents it to everyone.

It’s actually really refreshing to see comedy that isn't so political and serious nowadays.  It seems like so many want to be a John Stewart or Steven Colbert and it’s really annoying.  So take some time to relax from the stresses of work and/or school and check out some good, not so clean, shit jokes with your mommy Christina P.  Check out her album It's Hard Being a Person from Christinacomedy.com!

Tom Segura

Tom Segura has a less serious style of comedy, but don’t let that fool you.  Just because he doesn't talk about politics or the state of our current economic situation doesn't mean that his jokes aren't well written with perfect delivery.  His lay-back approach while standing on stage seems like he just came up with the joke on the spot because he seems so comfortable and calm.  Sometimes you will see a comedian tell a joke that is so absolutely hilarious that they can’t not laugh at their own joke.  Tommy “Buns”  never, if ever rarely laughs at his own shit.  It could be the funniest midget joke in the world that gets the crowd rolling on the floor, and he won’t budge.  So if you’re in the mood to hear some great midget jokes, jokes about stupid people, and all types of other hilarious stuff check this mommy out.  His last comedy album Trilled, released in 2010, is laugh your ass off funny, and his latest album White Girls with Cornrows is a must listen-to, get it off of his website Tomsegura.com

You can hear Tom and his wife, comedian Christina Pazsitzky on their comedy podcast Your Mom’s House.  They often have guests on, which are mostly other comedians, so this is a great source if you’re looking to find more comedy to check out and hear about upcoming comedy show dates for them.  In addition, they have awesome segments called “RealTalk”, “Fill Her Up, Seal Her Shut”, calls from Tom’s dad ‘Top Dog’, where he describes the dumps he’s been taking, and much, much more.  So, if you like hearing about wiping your ass, filling up and sealing shut celebrities, and just overall toilet humor check this shit out on iTunes for free or go to Allthingscomedy.com!

Here's an animation of one of his jokes:

Bill Burr

Coming after Patrice in this blog, it only makes sense that Bill Burr should go along with him since the two were good friends.  Coming out of the Boston comedy clubs, Burr represents that last of a dying breed of comics to me.  The east coast, no shit-taking, loud mouth comedians are among my favorite types of people to watch perform.  These aren't your nerdy-alternative pussy comics that say the word "awkward" in every other joke, no.  Bill is one of the rarest types of comedians in my eyes.  One minute he will go off on a rant about how the government is fucking the people over and by the way he talks and how passionate and funny he makes it, you will find yourself agreeing with him.  Right after he makes a great point he'll remind the audience that he has no idea what he is talking about and that he is a dumbass.

I love how Burr makes remarks about his intelligence by saying he's an idiot, but because he is so self-aware and conscious to the fact that he doesn't have a fucking clue as to what's going on in the world (like most people who just pretend they do), he's actually quite the opposite of dumb.

His podcast, The Monday Morning Podcast is among my top 5 favorite podcasts out there.  Rarely does he have guests on, so at first it may seem like he's a lunatic talking to himself, well he is, and it's hilarious.  From listening to him get upset and go on a 15 minute rant about something like how cashews are gay to hearing his opinions on foreign policy to even giving advice to listeners that write in, it's really one of the best podcasts if you're into good comedy.

His stand up special Let It Go, written in 2010 and is one of the funniest hour specials I have ever seen.  Just two years later he came out with a brand new hour in You People Are All The Same.  This should prove that he is among the hardest working comedians along with Louie C.K. and Joe Rogan.

For anybody who is into a ball-busting type of east coast comedy I cannot recommend Bill Burr enough!
So go check out his specials, even just clips on youtube and The Monday Morning Podcast, it's fuckin' free on iTunes for god's sake. In addition he created his own comedy podcast network with tons of popular and lesser known comic with their own podcasts, you can check it out at Allthingscomedy.com

Here's a clip from Let It Go. (click the title on the top part of the video screen to view it on youtube because it won't work here)
