Joey
“Coco” Diaz
Without
a doubt, Joey “Coco” Diaz is the most interesting comedian out there now. His background is not of comedic origins at
all, in fact for a good portion of his life he was a street guy, small time
gangster if you will. Growing up in
Cuba, Diaz moved to the North Bergen, NJ at an early age and ran around on the
streets doing what he could to survive. I’m not going to write about one the
many stories that he has because it won’t sound nearly as good as it would
coming from his mouth.
He
claims that he got into stand up while in prison by going up in front of the
crowd of inmates during movie night and telling jokes about the kitchen. The way he performs is crazy-awesome. He is another comedian that seems like he
never writes out his jokes, but just goes up and performs. I was lucky to be able to see him perform at
the Icehouse comedy club in Pasadena, CA about a year ago. I don’t even think that he was on the roster
to perform that night, but he just showed up and rocked the crowd for something
like 10 or 15 minutes and then just left.
The emcee, Tony Hinchcliffe, got up right after said “Joey Diaz just
came up and raped our minds, and then just left” and everybody roared with
laughter because that’s exactly what he did.
His
fast-talking, loud-cussing, weed-smoking, not giving a fuck style of comedy is absolutely
hilarious. Regarded as the funniest man
in the world by fellow friend and comedian Joe Rogan, Diaz is starting the get
the recognition he deserves with roles in more movies and television and tons of comedy
spots.
Diaz
is a frequent guest on the Joe Rogan
Experience podcast and had a podcast with comedian Felicia Michaels called Beauty and Da Beast for a long time but
has stopped doing it. He now has his own
podcast, The Church of What’s Happening
Now, where he talks with his co-host Lee Syatt about everything from being
a fat-fuck and exercising to how he views young people now. In addition he has guests call in who range
from writers in Hollywood to friends who he used to rob people with. His stories are incredible and you have to
see him live! He released his latest comedy album, It's Either You or he Priest, in April 2012 and currently writes and records his life stories in a series of albums entitle Testicle Testaments. You can get it all on iTunes and check out his website Joeydiaz.net, I highly suggest it.
To get a real feel for this guy, you have to watch him, youtube doesn't do him justice though.
